Introduction

One of the most common questions I get from people looking to add solar to their property, RV, or boat is, “How many solar panels do I need to run a couple of things?”

Usually, they aren't trying to power their entire home. They might want to run a refrigerator, a few lights, a TV, a water pump, or charge some devices. And because they don't use these things very often, they understandably think the answer should be pretty simple: figure out how many panels they need and they're done.

But there’s another important part of the system that often gets overlooked, the battery. It is actually where you should be starting.

Your solar panels produce energy when the sun is shining, but your battery stores that energy so you can use it when the sun isn't. Choosing the right battery isn't simply a matter of buying the biggest one you can afford. Battery capacity, usable energy, charging requirements, temperature, inverter sizing, and your actual energy consumption all need to be considered.

I've seen people spend thousands of dollars on batteries without fully understanding how the battery fits into the rest of their solar system.

So before you buy a battery for your cabin, RV, or boat, here are 5 things I wish every off-grid solar customer knew.

Battery capacity isn't the same as usable energy

A battery might be advertised as 5 kWh, 14 kWh, or 20 kWh, but you need to understand how much energy you can actually use. Chemistry, recommended depth of discharge, reserve capacity, and system losses all matter.

A battery doesn't create energy...it stores it

A bigger battery won't solve an energy shortage if you don't have enough solar or another charging source to replenish it. This is a great place to explain the relationship between solar production, daily loads, and battery capacity.

Temperature matters more than most people realize

Especially in an off-grid system. Battery performance and charging limitations can change significantly with temperature. This is particularly important with lithium batteries in cold climates. It affects all batteries in different ways but if below freezing avoid charging lithium unless they are the heated version.

Your inverter and battery have to work together

It's not enough to look at the battery's amp-hour or kWh rating. You also need to consider the battery's maximum continuous discharge current and the inverter's power requirements. A battery can have plenty of stored energy but still be unable to supply a large load. Everything in your system needs to have balance, as best as you can and it will give you its longest life.

The right battery starts with proper system design

This is the big takeaway. Don't start by asking, “How big of a battery should I buy?” Start with:

  • What are your daily energy requirements?
  • What are your largest loads?
  • How many days of autonomy do you need?
  • How much solar do you have?
  • What happens during poor weather?
  • Do you have a generator or another charging source?
  • What inverter will be supplying the loads?

Then you can determine the battery size that actually makes sense.

Conclusion

Choosing the right battery for an off-grid solar system is about much more than simply buying the biggest battery you can afford. Your battery needs to work as part of a complete system, alongside your solar array, inverter, generator, and the loads you need to power.

A properly sized battery will give you the energy you need without spending money on capacity you don't need. More importantly, good system design helps ensure your batteries are charged properly, protected from extreme conditions, and capable of handling the demands you place on them.

Before you buy a battery, look at the whole system, not just the battery. Read up on the brand, look at some reviews from current users. A little planning up front can save you thousands of dollars and a lot of frustration down the road.

That’s why I always recommend starting with your energy needs first, then designing the solar, battery, inverter, and backup charging system around those needs.
