Introduction

A few years ago, I had the opportunity to work on a houseboat that was as beautiful as it was interesting from an energy perspective.

The goal was simple: create an energy-efficient boat that could enjoy the comforts of a modern home, including full AC power, without needing to run a generator every time someone wanted to turn something on.

We installed solar panels, an inverter and a lithium battery bank, along with a number of Victron components to manage and monitor the system.

At the time, lithium batteries were still relatively expensive, and the battery technology available to us was considerably different from what is available today.

Fast-forward a few years, and the owners wanted more energy storage.

That gave me the opportunity to return to a boat I had a lot of fun designing and upgrading, and to see just how much battery technology has changed.

The Original System

When we first built the system, the houseboat had approximately 240 amp-hours of lithium battery capacity. Two 120ah lithium batteries in parallel.

At the time, that was a substantial amount of usable energy storage, especially for a boat running primarily from solar.

The system was designed around efficiency. Instead of relying on a generator to provide AC power, the solar panels could charge the batteries during the day, while the inverter could provide AC power when needed.

That meant the boat could operate more like a home while sitting out on the lake, quietly producing and storing its own electricity.

And that's one of the things I really enjoyed about this project.

There is something pretty satisfying about being on a boat in the middle of a lake, running AC appliances, and knowing the electricity is coming from the sun rather than a noisy generator.

Battery Technology Has Changed

One of the biggest changes in off-grid solar over the past few years has been lithium battery technology.

When we originally installed the system, lithium batteries were considerably more expensive, so getting a large amount of storage capacity could be a significant investment.

Today, you can get substantially more capacity for the same amount of money.

Battery technology has also improved in other ways.

Modern lithium batteries can come with features such as:

  • Built-in Bluetooth monitoring
  • Heating for cold-weather charging
  • Detailed state-of-charge information
  • Monitoring of charging and discharging current
  • Communication with other system components

That makes today's battery systems not only more affordable, but also much easier to monitor and manage.

Doubling the Battery Capacity

For this upgrade, we replaced the original battery capacity with a much larger 460Ah, 12-volt CANBAT lithium battery.

That took the system from approximately 240Ah to 460Ah.

In other words, we didn't just add a little more storage, we almost doubled the battery capacity.

That's a significant difference on a boat.

More battery capacity means more energy available when the sun isn't producing, greater flexibility when using AC loads, and less dependence on running a generator.

And because the battery technology has improved so much since the original installation, the upgrade provides considerably more capability without requiring the kind of battery investment that would have been necessary a few years ago.

A Much Smarter Battery

The new CANBAT battery also brings some features that weren't nearly as common when the original system was installed.

The battery has Bluetooth monitoring, allowing you to see what's happening inside the battery from your phone.

You can monitor things such as:

  • Battery state of charge
  • Charging current
  • Discharging current
  • Battery voltage
  • Battery status
  • Temperature information

The battery also has built-in heating, which is particularly useful in a marine application where temperatures can get low.

Being able to see what the battery is doing makes troubleshooting and system management much easier.

Instead of simply looking at a battery voltage and trying to guess what's happening, you can actually see the information coming from the battery management system.

Victron Monitoring Adds Another Layer

The boat also has a number of Victron Energy components, which gives us another powerful layer of monitoring and control.

The Victron system can provide information about the overall energy system, including what's coming from the solar array, what's going into the batteries and what's being consumed.

The combination of Victron monitoring and the CANBAT battery's Bluetooth monitoring gives the owners a much better picture of what's happening with their energy system.

That's something I really appreciate about modern off-grid systems.

A properly designed system isn't just about installing solar panels and batteries.

It's about being able to understand what the system is doing.

A Houseboat That Produces Its Own Power

What I like most about this project isn't really the numbers.

It's the concept.

This is a beautiful houseboat sitting out on a lake, with solar panels quietly producing electricity, lithium batteries storing that energy, and an inverter providing full AC power.

No generator running.

No engine noise.

Just sunlight being converted into electricity and stored for later use.

That's what off-grid energy is supposed to be about.

It's not necessarily about giving up the conveniences of modern life.

It's about finding a smarter way to power them.

And boats are a perfect example.

Space is limited, fuel is inconvenient, generators are noisy, and you're often in an environment where simplicity and reliability matter.

A well-designed solar and battery system can dramatically reduce the need for a generator while making life on the water more comfortable.

Conclusion

I always wanted to solar power a houseboat! I would also like one myself one day. Instead for now, I had the opportunity to live my vision on someone elses boat but the rewards are still there, that vision is still a reality.

Although looking back at this houseboat project a few years later was a great reminder of just how quickly energy-storage technology is evolving.

We started with approximately 240Ah of lithium storage.

Today, the boat has 460Ah, more than doubling its battery capacity, along with modern features such as Bluetooth monitoring and battery heating.

The Victron system provides additional monitoring and control, giving the owners much more information about how their energy system is performing.

And in this case, it was a lot of fun to come back to a boat I enjoyed working on the first time around and make an already impressive solar-powered houseboat even better.

There's something pretty special about creating a boat that can sit quietly on the lake, provide the comforts of AC power, and let the sun do the work.
